Moving & Packing Tips from All Access Moving

Moving can feel overwhelming—but a little preparation goes a long way. Whether you're hiring us to pack or doing it yourself, here are some expert tips to help make your move smoother, safer, and more efficient.

📅 Before Moving Day: Plan Ahead
-
Book your move early. If possible, reserve your moving services in advance to secure your preferred date—especially during peak moving season.
-
Update your address. Don’t forget to fill out a mail forwarding form with Canada Post and update your address with any relevant services.
-
Notify your service providers. Contact your telephone, hydro, internet, and cable companies to schedule disconnection or transfers.
-
Keep one phone active. If you're disconnecting a landline, wait until after moving day—unless you have a working cell phone.
-
Reserve parking. Make sure there's enough space for the moving truck. In winter, clear all snow and ice from driveways and walkways. If you live on a tight street, call 311 to arrange a parking permit.
-
Reserve the elevator. If you're in a condo or apartment building, let the management know your moving date and reserve the service elevator ahead of time.
📦 Packing Tips (If You're Packing Yourself)
-
Give yourself enough time. Packing always takes longer than expected—start early to avoid last-minute stress.
-
Use quality packing materials. Use packing paper (not tissue) to protect fragile items like dishes and glassware.
-
Use no more than 3 box sizes. Keeping things uniform makes stacking easier and safer in the truck.
-
Don’t overload boxes. Try to keep each box under 50 lbs and always lift with your legs, not your back.
-
Reinforce box bottoms. Always tape the bottom of every box to make sure it holds up during the move.
-
Pack books flat. Never stand them on their spines—this can damage the binding.
-
Pack only in boxes. Avoid garbage bags, laundry baskets etc—they don’t stack well, and bags can easily tear.
-
Close boxes completely. Items sticking out can cause damage and make stacking impossible.
-
Pack artwork and decor. If it fits in a box, pack it. Otherwise, wrap it securely for transport.

🧰 Pro Tips for a Smooth Move
-
Create an "Essentials" box. Label a box with items you’ll need right away at your new home: toiletries, chargers, basic tools, important documents, and a few dishes.
-
Bag your hardware. Keep screws, bolts, and hardware from disassembled furniture in clearly labeled bags—and pack them with your "Unload First" box.
-
Stay organized = Save money. The more prepared and organized you are, the faster the move, and the more money you’ll save on moving day!
